Synchronicity: The Universe’s Guide to Spiritual Awakening

You glanced at your phone and it read 11:11, for the third time that day. Or a stranger said exactly what you needed to hear, completely unprompted, and then walked away. Or you picked up a book you hadn’t thought about in years, opened it to a random page, and read a sentence that answered the question you’d been quietly carrying for months.

Something in you paused. Pure recognition. A quiet part of you already knew this wasn’t random.

What Synchronicity Really Is

Synchronicity is the meaningful convergence of events that have no causal connection, things that happen together with a precision too striking to be accounted for by chance alone. Carl Jung, the Swiss psychiatrist who first named the phenomenon, described an underlying order that moves beneath the surface of ordinary life, one that expresses itself through the patterns of our experience in ways the rational mind struggles to account for.

Most of us are taught to see the world as a series of separate, unconnected events, things that happen to us, around us, without any particular relationship to what’s happening within us. Synchronicity reveals a different reality: that the inner world and the outer world are in constant conversation. What you’re feeling, what you’re asking, what you’re moving towards internally. All of it can begin to show up in the pattern of your external experience with an almost startling accuracy.

How Synchronicity Announces a Spiritual Awakening

For many people, synchronicities don’t just occur during a spiritual awakening. They become one of the primary ways the awakening announces itself. My own experience is a clear example of this.

In 2010, I began noticing repetitive number sequences everywhere. Most notably, 11:11. It happened so frequently, and with such uncanny timing, that I knew something unusual was occurring. So I did what most people do. I searched online. What I found stopped me in my tracks. Thousands of people all over the world were reporting the same experience. People were building entire websites dedicated to the phenomenon. Something large was clearly happening, and it wasn’t just happening to me. I knew then that people in all corners of the globe were being awakened for a higher purpose, and that I was part of it.

By 2011, the messages had become more varied and more frequent. The number 144 began appearing alongside 11:11, in timestamps, in measurements, in coordinates, woven into places I hadn’t chosen and timing I hadn’t arranged. I later discovered that 144 carries profound significance across ancient scriptures and cultures, connected to the geometry of creation and the evolution of consciousness. It was imprinted into my numerology at birth: my birthday falls on the 14th of April, written 14/4. I would go on to discover that my Mayan long count birthday falls on 0.0.0.14.4. The number wasn’t following me. It was part of me. It had been there the whole time.

This is what synchronicity does during a spiritual awakening. It shows you a thread that runs all the way back through your life, and forward into the mission you’re here to fulfil.

The Role of Intuition in Reading the Signs

Synchronicity and intuition are inseparable. The signs are always present, but our capacity to notice them, and to interpret them honestly, depends on how attuned we are to our inner knowing. Our intuition is the instrument through which synchronicity becomes legible.

I’ve sat with many people over the years who could recall dozens of synchronicities in their lives and had never once trusted them as real. They filed them away under “strange coincidence” and moved on. Part of the spiritual path is learning to trust that inner witness, the quiet recognition that says: pay attention to this.

A useful practice is to begin treating synchronicities as questions rather than answers. When 11:11 appears on your clock, or a particular song plays at exactly the moment you needed to hear it, sit with the feeling it leaves rather than immediately reaching for an interpretation. What were you thinking in the seconds before? What question had you been quietly holding? What part of your life was asking for clarity? The deeper significance of seeing 11:11 goes far beyond the numbers themselves. It’s an invitation to become present, to witness where your attention has landed, and to listen from a still place.

Moments That Cannot Be Explained Away

One of the synchronicities that has stayed with me was not a number but a single word. Shortly after moving to Roatan, a woman I had just met said the word “authentic” in conversation. I cannot tell you what the sentence was. But that one word landed somewhere deep inside me with a force I had never felt before. I knew, in a way that bypassed all rational thought, that something in me had just been activated. Within two years, my entire life had changed. The marriage, the identity, the direction, all of it.

That’s the thing about synchronicity. It rarely comes as a grand announcement. It comes as a single word, a number on a clock, a book that falls from a shelf, a stranger who delivers a message they didn’t know they were carrying. The outer event is small. The inner response is enormous.

Later, in 2012, I was on the island preparing for the Venus Transit, a date I felt strongly drawn to, though I couldn’t entirely explain why. I found a symbol carved into a dock near the sea that corresponded directly to the geometry of the transit. When I travelled to Lake Atitlan in Guatemala for the transit, I arrived the day before and immediately met people who were gathering for a celebration the following day. It was the Venus Transit. Everything fell into place, as it does when you are following the thread of true guidance.

There’s another thread that wove through my life for years before I understood what it was pointing to. From 2009 onward, every time I needed a home on the island of Roatan, I would find one, without searching particularly hard, in the same valley. Again and again, I ended up in proximity to the same stretch of land. In retrospect, the guidance was undeniable: there was something in that valley I was being prepared to receive.

In 2017, my daughter found a quartz crystal during a walk through the gully in that valley. I had felt intuitively that a crystal was coming. I’d been receiving a great deal of guidance about the land and its significance to my mission. Note what happened, what you were feeling in the moments before, and what question or theme felt alive in you at the time. Over weeks and months, the patterns become unmistakable. And unmistakable patterns begin to feel less like mystery and more like conversation.

I am a naturally skeptical person. I have always needed evidence, solid and irrefutable, before I trust what I’m being shown. The synchronicities in my own awakening gave me exactly that. Numbers imprinted at birth. Measurements I didn’t choose. Timing I couldn’t have engineered. Moments of recognition so precise they bypassed every doubt I had.
