Do You Need a License for Reiki in Alaska?

Hands-off and distance energy healing need no Alaska license, as long as you do not claim to diagnose or treat any condition. Hands-on Reiki is exempt from massage licensing when your hands rest lightly with no pressure or soft tissue manipulation and you do not call it massage.

Can I offer hands-on Reiki in Alaska?

Yes, within limits. Alaska's massage law has two exceptions that fit Reiki closely. One covers a person only resting the hands on the surface of another person's body without delivering pressure or manipulating the soft tissues. The other covers a person using only light touch, words and directed movement to affect the energy systems.

Reiki is not named, and no board ruling on Reiki was found. The condition is that your touch stays resting or light, with no pressure and no soft tissue manipulation.

Can I offer hands-off or distance sessions?

Yes. The massage law excludes anyone only performing techniques that involve no contact with another person's body, and distance sessions involve no contact either. Alaska's medical practice act covers diagnosing, treating or prescribing for any ailment, disease or condition for a fee, donation or other consideration, so describe your sessions as relaxation and well-being and avoid claiming to treat anything.

The act exempts practicing the religious tenets of a church. That exemption does not extend to an ordinary healing business.

Does it matter if I am paid?

Yes. Alaska's massage definition covers only services provided for compensation, and the main part of the medical practice definition covers only acts done for a fee, donation or other consideration. Free sessions fall outside both. Titles such as M.D. or physician are restricted whether you charge or not.

Alaska Statutes 08.61.100(5) and 08.64.380

Which words and claims should I avoid?

Without a license you may not represent yourself as a massage therapist. That includes terms such as massage, massage practitioner, massage therapist, massage therapy, therapeutic massage, massage technician, massagist, masseur, masseuse, myotherapist, myotherapy, or any term that implies a massage technique. A knowing violation is a class B misdemeanor.
