Do You Need a License for Reiki in Arizona?
Hands-off and distance energy healing need no Arizona license, as long as you do not diagnose or claim to treat disease. Touch-based Reiki is exempt from massage licensing when the client stays fully clothed and you do not call it massage.
Can I offer hands-on Reiki in Arizona?
Arizona exempts from massage licensing, when the customer is fully clothed, techniques specifically intended to affect the human energy field. Reiki is not named, and its practice fits this wording. The only stated condition is that your client stays fully clothed.
Massage itself is defined as the manual application of compression, stretch, vibration or mobilization of organs and tissues beneath the skin. No board ruling on Reiki was found.

Can I offer hands-off or distance sessions?
Yes. Massage in Arizona requires manual application, so no-touch and distance work fall outside it, and the energy field exemption would cover it anyway. The medical practice act defines medicine as diagnosing, treating or correcting human conditions by any means, so do not diagnose or claim to treat disease.
That act exempts treatment by prayer or laying on of hands as a religious rite.
Arizona Revised Statutes 32-1401(22) and 32-1421
Does it matter if I am paid?
Yes. Arizona defines the practice of massage therapy as massage therapy done for a fee or other consideration.

Which words and claims should I avoid?
Only licensees may claim to be a massage therapist or use massage therapy terms in advertising, and unlicensed people may not use the licensed titles or abbreviations. The board may restrict further references by rule, and a violation is a class 1 misdemeanor. Avoid any claim to diagnose or treat disease.
Arizona Revised Statutes 32-4252
Do cities or counties have their own rules?
Yes. Arizona cities license massage businesses separately. Phoenix City Code 10-18, for example, regulates massage establishments and refers to touching techniques. Check with your city and county before you open a practice.
