Do You Need a License for Reiki in Iowa?
Hands-off and distance Reiki need no Iowa license. Light-touch Reiki is exempt from massage licensing when touch is limited to what is needed to sense and affect the human energy system, you work within a profession with established standards and ethics, and you never call it massage or bodywork.
Can I offer hands-on Reiki in Iowa?
Yes, with conditions. Iowa exempts people working within the scope of a profession with established standards and ethics, in which touch is limited to what is essential for palpation and affecting the human energy system. The services must not be designated or implied to be massage therapy.
Reiki is not named in the exemption. Light-touch Reiki fits its description, and no board ruling on Reiki was found.
Iowa Code 152C.9(7)
Can I offer hands-off or distance sessions?
Yes. Work without touch involves no manipulation of muscle or connective tissue, so it falls outside Iowa's massage definition, and it also fits the energy system exemption. This guide did not review the Iowa medical practice act, so avoid claims to diagnose or treat disease.
Iowa Code 152C.1(3) and 152C.9(7)
Does it matter if I am paid?
Yes. Iowa's definition of massage therapy covers only performance for compensation. Massage and bodywork given to immediate family members are also exempt.
Iowa Code 152C.1(3) and 152C.9(4)
Which words and claims should I avoid?
Without a license you may not use L.M.T., licensed massage therapist, massage therapist, masseur, masseuse or any title implying massage therapy. A violation is a serious misdemeanor, and the board can also impose civil penalties of up to $1,000 per offense for unlicensed practice. Your advertising must not falsely suggest you are licensed.
Bodywork and bodywork therapy are inside Iowa's definition of massage therapy, so avoid describing your energy work as bodywork.
