Do You Need a License for Reiki in Kentucky?
Hands-off and distance Reiki need no Kentucky license. Light-touch Reiki is exempt from massage licensing when touch is limited to what is needed to sense and affect the human energy system, you work within a profession with established standards and ethics, and you never call it massage.
Can I offer hands-on Reiki in Kentucky?
Yes, with conditions. Kentucky exempts people working within the scope of a profession with established standards and ethics, in which touch is limited to what is essential for palpation and affecting the human energy system. Polarity therapy is the named example, and the services must not be designated or implied to be massage or massage therapy.
Reiki is not named. Light-touch Reiki fits the description, and no board ruling on Reiki was found.

Can I offer hands-off or distance sessions?
Yes. Kentucky's massage definition requires touch to soft tissue, so sessions without touch and remote sessions fall outside it, and they also fit the energy system exemption. This guide did not review the Kentucky medical practice act, so avoid claims to diagnose or treat disease.

Does it matter if I am paid?
Payment is not a condition of the license rule, which bars anyone from practicing massage therapy without a license. The law does define a massage therapist as a licensee who works for compensation, and compensation includes barter and gratuities. Massage of immediate family members is exempt, and the energy work exemption applies either way.

Which words and claims should I avoid?
Unless licensed, no person or business may use massage, massage therapy, massage therapist, massage practitioner, masseur, masseuse, L.M.T. or any words implying massage therapy is provided. A sign or advertisement suggesting you are a massage therapist is prima facie evidence of a violation, and each massage given without a license is a separate offense.
Keep the word massage out of your business name and advertising, and avoid diagnosing illness.

Do cities or counties have their own rules?
Kentucky's massage law supersedes local ordinances that regulate massage therapists, according to the statute text quoted in a 2026 bill. A 2026 attempt to widen local authority over massage businesses did not pass. Your city or county may still require a general business license.

Recent changes. In 2026, SB 132 would have raised the penalty for unlicensed massage and widened local authority over massage businesses. It passed the Senate and stalled in a House committee, a similar amendment to HB 567 was withdrawn, and the legislature's pages show neither became law.
