The Reiki Levels Explained

Most people first meet Reiki as three levels: Level 1, Level 2, and Master. On the surface, that is exactly what it is, a path that unfolds in three stages, each one opening you more fully to the flow of healing energy. But how you are taught to connect with that energy matters just as much as the levels themselves. So before we walk through each stage, let us begin with something that shapes the whole journey.

Where Reiki Energy Really Comes From

You will often hear Reiki described as drawing energy in from outside yourself, pulling universal energy down through the crown and out through the hands. At the Academy of Energy Healing, we teach it a little differently. The Source of that healing energy already lives within you, at the heart, and that is where we connect with it.

There is a real consequence to reaching beyond ourselves. When we draw energy in from outside, we hand a small piece of our sovereignty away and become vulnerable to outside influence. That influence can be good or bad, and because our discernment softens while we are pulling energy from elsewhere, we cannot always tell which is which. Connecting through the heart keeps you anchored in your own center. The energy flows from a place of love and coherence that is unmistakably yours, your discernment stays clear, and you remain the one who chooses what you allow in.

None of this asks for more effort. Connecting from the heart takes no force and no strain. You are simply remembering a Source you were never truly separate from. Every level of Reiki below rests on this foundation.

Reiki Level 1: The Foundation

Level 1 is where your journey begins, and its focus is you. This first stage is about self-healing, learning to feel energy, and opening the channel so it can flow freely through you.

During Level 1 you receive your first attunement, which gently opens and sensitizes your energy system. From there you learn the foundations of a hands-on session, how to hold healing space, and how to bring Reiki into your daily life. Many students describe Level 1 as a homecoming, a quiet settling back into themselves. Most of the early work is practiced on yourself, because healing others always begins with healing you.

Reiki Level 2: Going Deeper

Level 2 expands your practice outward. Here you are introduced to the traditional Reiki symbols, which act as keys to focus and direct energy for specific purposes, such as emotional healing or clearing.

This is also the level where you learn to heal others, and where distance healing opens up. Because Reiki is not bound by space, you can send healing to someone across the room or across the world. Your second attunement deepens your capacity to hold and direct energy, and for many students this is the stage where Reiki begins to feel like a natural part of who they are.

Reiki Master and Teacher Level

The Master, or Master and Teacher, level is the culmination of the journey. You receive the Master attunement and are introduced to the Master symbol, deepening your connection and your ability to work with energy at its fullest.

Master level reaches beyond your own practice. It gives you the ability to attune and teach others, passing the gift of Reiki forward. Stepping into this role is a genuine threshold: you become a guide as well as a practitioner, holding space for others to open to their own healing. It asks for presence, integrity, and a heart that is willing to serve.

How the Levels Are Attuned, and Yes, Online

Each level is marked by an attunement, an energetic initiation passed from teacher to student that opens you to that stage of Reiki. Walking the Full Path
