What Does “Raising Your Vibration” Actually Mean?

A woman came to a session once and spoke the phrase almost apologetically. She had been told to raise her vibration. She had tried gratitude lists, green juice, affirmations taped to the bathroom mirror, and a playlist of tones she didn’t especially enjoy. Still, the flatness she was carrying remained. What she wanted to know, and what few people had answered plainly, was whether the phrase pointed to anything real. That question deserves a thoughtful answer. The phrase does point toward a meaningful experience, although the way it’s often taught can lead us away from the very thing we’re seeking.
Here is the plainest version I can give you. Your body is alive with electrical activity and rhythm. Your heart generates a measurable electromagnetic field, your brain produces patterns that can be read on a screen, and many healing traditions understand the whole living system as a field of energy and information that extends past your skin. When people talk about your vibration, they are often describing the felt state of that whole system: whether energy moves freely or holds tension, whether you feel coherent or scattered, and whether you’re carrying more than you can comfortably process.
Coherence Is the Word the Phrase Is Reaching For
The language of high and low can make frequency sound like a spiritual ranking system. Coherence offers a kinder and more useful way to understand it. When you feel light, clear, and quietly powerful, the different parts of your system may be moving in greater harmony. Your heart rhythm, breath, nervous system, and emotional state begin to settle into a shared pattern. Research into heart-rate variability and physiological coherence gives us one lens for understanding this experience, while healers have long described a similar felt sense as energy becoming clear and balanced.
An incoherent state can feel like static: thoughts racing while the body is exhausted, a smile on the surface with grief moving underneath, or two parts of you pulling in different directions. Holding that much inner tension takes enormous energy. No wonder it leaves you tired.
Think of a bell packed tightly in cloth. The bell remains whole. Its shape is intact, its metal is the same metal, and its tone still lives within it. Strike it and the sound comes through dull and swallowed, barely able to travel beyond the cloth. Striking it harder only adds force.
The tone returns as the wrapping comes away. It returns whole because it was there all along. Your field can work in a similar way. The wrappings may be unprocessed grief, loyalty to a version of yourself you’ve outgrown, or the constant low hum of a nervous system braced for what might happen next. Raising your vibration becomes the gentle work of unwrapping.
Why the Popular Version Can Leave You Feeling Worse
Once you see it as unwrapping, the usual advice begins to feel incomplete. Force yourself into high-vibrational thoughts. Refuse to feel anger. Cut low-vibration people out of your life. Stay positive. Each instruction can add another layer of cloth around the bell, muffling the honest movement that wants space to breathe.
In sessions, I often meet people whose fields have become quiet and tight after years of performing lightness. They have worked so hard to stay positive that grief, rage, and ordinary human disappointment have had nowhere to go. The space around the heart can grow still in a way that feels very different from peace. When the held emotion finally begins to move, intensity often comes first: tears, warmth, or a wave of anger that takes them by surprise. Then comes a spaciousness they haven’t felt in years.
Anger, grief, and fear all carry movement. When emotion is felt, honoured, and given a safe way to complete its natural cycle, the whole system has an opportunity to settle into greater coherence. Suppressed emotion often continues to ask for our attention through tension, fatigue, or a sense of inner heaviness. Some popular spiritual teachings lose this essential thread. Understanding where spiritual teaching can quietly lose its way helps you recognise the practices that open you, honour your humanity, and return you to your own discernment.
What Gently Shifts Your State, and What It Feels Like
The things that genuinely change your state are often beautifully simple. Sleep. Water. Sunlight on your face before you look at a screen. A slow breath with a comfortably lengthened exhale, which can help your nervous system settle. Time in nature, allowing your body to meet a steadier rhythm. Honest conversation with someone who welcomes you exactly as you are. Feeling what you’ve been avoiding in the presence of enough support. Gentle movement that gives emotion a pathway through the body.
Every item on that list helps release something held or invites a scattered system back into rhythm. Let this land clearly, because it can save you years of striving: the state you’re seeking already lives underneath what you’re carrying.
The shift itself often arrives quietly. Colours may look slightly richer. Sound in a room may feel easier to receive. You may become more sensitive to other people’s states, which can feel disorienting while you learn to understand your own boundaries. Old memories may surface with less charge. Sometimes a stretch of tiredness comes first, and that fatigue can have an understandable place in the integration process. If you want a fuller picture of how the early stages can feel from the inside, learning the signs of a field rebalancing may help you meet them with greater trust and care.
This conversation often gathers at two edges: complete dismissal and mystical exaggeration. What current research can and can’t show creates a thoughtful middle ground where curiosity and discernment can stand together. You may also notice how often the language of ascension is used to describe leaving the body behind, while the experience itself may invite you deeper into your body, your truth, and your life.
I would love for you to carry forward a smaller and far more useful question. Ask yourself: what am I carrying that I may be ready to set down? The answer is often specific, sometimes inconvenient, and usually already whispering within you. It may be a conversation you’ve been avoiding, a grief you moved through too quickly, or a family role that costs you more than you’ve allowed yourself to admit.
Choose one small layer and begin there. You may feel the difference in your field sooner than you expect. This is a practice you can return to throughout your life, and the Awaken Your Inner Healer guide offers language and gentle groundwork when you want somewhere to begin. The bell has always carried its tone. Your work is simply to let the wrapping soften and fall away.
