What to Do When a Client Has an Emotional Release

Mid-session, hands still resting on a client’s chest or shoulders, something shifts. Their breathing changes. Tears start, or their body trembles, or a sound escapes that surprises you both. This is an emotional release, and it’s one of the most common things you’ll encounter in your work as an energy healer.

Stay Present, First

Stay present. That’s it. That’s the most important skill in this moment, more than any technique or words. Your client needs to feel that you’re not afraid of what’s happening, that you’re not rushing them, and that you’re not going to make their experience about your own discomfort.

I once sat through a session where a client suddenly started sobbing, hard, within the first few minutes. My instinct was to ask what had come up. I’m glad I didn’t. I just stayed with my hands steady on her shoulders and let it run its course. Afterward she told me it was the first time in fifteen years she’d cried about her father without someone trying to comfort her out of it. Sometimes the most healing thing you can offer is simply not interrupting.

What to Do, and What to Leave Alone

Keep your hands where they are unless your client asks you to move them. Continued physical contact, when welcomed, provides grounding and safety. Soften your voice if you speak at all: simple reflections work well, “you’re safe,” or “let it move,” or sometimes just silence with your continued presence. Adjust your own breathing to something slow and steady, since clients often unconsciously sync their breath to yours.

Questions about what’s coming up can wait. This moment calls for releasing rather than processing or analysis, and questions tend to pull your client out of their body and into their head. The same goes for fixing, soothing away, or shortening the release; it needs to complete itself naturally.

If you feel emotional yourself, note it for later reflection rather than bringing it into the moment. The session is about your client’s process. The role of intuition in energy healing sessions matters here, but interpretation can wait; in the moment, your job is to hold space, not to analyze.

Why This Happens In the Body

Emotions are energy in motion, and they get stored in the body when they weren’t fully felt or expressed at the time they occurred. Energy work loosens the places where that storage has been holding, and the emotion that was trapped there finally has somewhere to go. The body and energy field had been holding this material, sometimes for years, and your work created the safety and the opening for it to surface.

This is closely connected to areas where energy has become stagnant or restricted. Stored emotion and stagnant energy are frequently the same thing seen from two angles.

After the Release Ends

Give extra time at the end of a session that included a significant release. Offer water and a few quiet minutes before they sit up or stand. Check in simply: “how are you feeling?” is usually enough, and you don’t need a full debrief unless your client wants one.

Mention that releases can continue after the session ends. Tiredness, more emotion, or even physical sensations like headaches can show up in the following day or two, part of what trauma-informed healing looks like in practice.

Sitting with someone else’s emotional release will, eventually, brush up against your own unprocessed material too. If you notice yourself becoming uncomfortable with releases, or finding ways to subtly shut them down, that discomfort is worth your own attention; it often traces back to your own relationship with emotion. This capacity gets stronger with practice and with your own ongoing inner work. The Energy Healer Course spends real time on exactly this kind of in-session work, more than a single post can cover.
